Ravn produces only the words the workers said to whoever it is that is asking them questions. There is not a single character given a name in the book and the questions asked to the employees are not recorded. The Employees is written in the form of transcribed interviews of the anonymous employees of the Six-Thousand Ship. But the novel is just as much within the genre of workplace dramedy as it is science fiction, as the full substance of the book is dedicated to exploring the (dys-)functioning of the spacecraft as a place where people work. ![]() It is a work of science fiction, detailing the inner workings of a deep space-travelling spacecraft, the Six-Thousand Ship, as its crew explores an exoplanet called New Discovery. Continuing with the now decades-long trend of blending literary and genre fiction, The Employees does not stop there it also mixes multiple genres. Olga Ravn’s The Employees is a tiny wisp of a book-it can easily be read in a single afternoon-but it packs quite a bit of fun and literary panache in between its narrow covers. ![]()
